Spiral Steel Sculpture Set of 7, Hand-Shaped Rusted Outdoor Art for Balconies & Terraces

An art object that stands on its own. No garden needed.
There are countless metal sculptures created for traditional outdoor spaces. As a metal artist, I wanted to make something for a different kind of setting: for people who love contemporary metal art but live in the city, with a balcony, terrace or rooftop as their outdoor space.

This set of seven handcrafted rusted steel sculptures grew from that idea.

Seven slender steel forms rise vertically from individual bases, each shaped into a flowing spiral. Their narrow silhouettes give the composition height and movement without taking over a compact space.
The individual forms are free to sway. Even a light breeze sets each spiral moving to its own rhythm, like a small group of breezy dancers at the edge of the city. Walk past and their silhouettes shift, separate and overlap against the railing and the sky.

THE SET

Heights include the base plate.

Each base plate is cut from 4 mm steel and measures 11 × 11 cm / 4.3 × 4.3 in, with four pre-drilled fixing holes.

The sculptural forms are made from 1.5 mm / 16 gauge steel.

ARRANGE IT YOUR WAY
Line the sculptures along a railing, arrange them together in a weighted container, or place several beside lounge furniture or against a plain wall.
The arrangements shown in the photographs are only suggestions. Grouped closely, the spirals merge into one flowing composition. Spaced farther apart, each sculpture reveals its own line and movement.
Because every sculpture has its own base, you are free to change the composition whenever you want.

NO TWO ALIKE
I cut, twist and shape every steel form individually by hand, working by eye and feel rather than producing identical curves by machine.
Some spirals open more widely, while others turn more tightly. Each belongs to the same composition while retaining a character of its own.
This individuality is intentional. It is the point where craftsmanship becomes creativity.
All edges and tips are carefully rounded and smoothed by hand.

THE FINISH
The surface is genuine rust, developed through controlled oxidation and never painted.
For this Balcony & Terrace version, the rust is sealed with Owatrol Oil, a penetrating protective oil long used in restoration and marine applications.
The oil penetrates and stabilises the rust layer, greatly reducing staining. This is particularly important on balconies and terraces, where the sculpture may stand close to tiles, stone or timber decking.
Owatrol also deepens the surface to a rich, warm brown that looks almost as if the steel has just been touched by rain. In direct sunlight, the sealed surface catches the light and the edges glow with copper and golden tones.
When the surface eventually begins to look dry, another coat of Owatrol Oil can be applied to help maintain its deep colour and protective finish.

PLACEMENT AND INSTALLATION
For outdoor use, every base must be securely weighted or fixed according to its location and exposure to wind.
For a removable installation, the base plates can be positioned inside a sufficiently heavy container and securely weighted with stones or gravel, as shown in the photographs.
On timber decking, the plates can be fixed directly through the four pre-drilled holes.

DESIGNED FOR URBAN LIVING
This collection was created for contemporary outdoor spaces where every square metre matters.
The seven individual sculptures bring height and gentle movement without requiring a large footprint. Their warm rusted surfaces work beautifully with timber, stone, gravel, concrete and contemporary outdoor furniture.
During the day, sunlight brings out the texture and changing tones of the steel. In the evening, the slender silhouettes become more graphic against walls, railings and the sky.
And because the sculpture is made entirely from steel, its visual presence remains throughout the year, including the quieter winter months.
Suitable for balconies, terraces, patios, rooftop spaces, courtyards and contemporary architectural settings.
